Paperback Edition
New & Unread - Published 2020

What distinguishes this book from the many excellent Oxford Guides is its focus on how the city can be experienced and perceived through ‘body, mind & spirit’, using our senses, memories, emotions and spirits. The book is lavishly illustrated with over a hundred of the author’s drawings and watercolours as well as his photographs of Oxford’s buildings and landscapes.

Chapters cover individual buildings, the wonders of Radcliffe Square, Oxford’s High Street, varied open spaces and waterways. To encourage active exploration, twelve sensory walks and climbs are included. The book is written for any reader – whether visitor, student, professional or resident, who has appreciated and experienced the riches of Oxford.

About the Author: Ian Davis, an architect, was in practice for twelve years in the UK and USA before spending twenty years lecturing in the School of Architecture in Oxford Brookes University (formerly Oxford Polytechnic). From the early 1970’s he embarked on a new career studying and advising the UN and Governments on Shelter following Disasters and Disaster Risk Management, involving travel to over 45 countries. In parallel, he has developed an interest in watercolour painting, writing and lecturing about Oxford and its rich architecture and landscape. This book brings together his lectures, walking tours, articles, paintings and drawings resulting from work that spans almost fifty years.
