Flaming June
The evenings are finally getting a little warmer, the opportunity to sit outside at the end of the day with a book is one of life’s simple pleasures. The month of June is always a joy, the days stretch out well into the evening, days which are full of strong and bright light, lush gardens bursting and full of colour, skies of endless blue – the setting sun in the late evening sky creating the most striking silhouettes. And this coming week sees the full moon on the evening of Tuesday 14th – if the sky is clear, we’ll be treated to the largest new moon of the year, the Strawberry or Rose Moon. There is beauty all around us and for that we are lucky and should savour our good fortune.
The beautiful painting below is called Flaming June and is by Sir Frederic Leighton

June by John Updike
The sun is rich
And gladly pays
In golden hours,
Silver days,
And long green weeks
That never end.
School’s out.
The time Is ours to spend.
There’s Little League,
Hopscotch, the creek,
And, after supper,
Hide-and-seek.
The live-long light
Is like a dream,
and freckles come
Like flies to cream.
It’s been a busy week in the world of Coles Signed Editions, the selection of new titles is as varied as ever, from the super cool photography of the super cool Paul Newman to whether it’s brown sauce or ketchup in the breakfast sarnie; we’re getting under the surface with Professor Alice Roberts; Steve Brusatte knows his mammals; footballer Nedum Onuoha has always looked at the game differently; Jonathan Freedland and Maurice Blik both share extraordinary stories of life after escape from awful circumstances; Gyles Brandreth has always been a little different; and Will Young seeks out the happiness and as always, there’s storytelling aplenty!
