Abundance is storytelling
about the need for more optimism
and a little less cynicism.
We need to be sold dreams, not problems.
There’s a book (there’s always a book!) which I picked up on a little while ago – ‘Abundance’ by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson. It’s political, but then again it isn’t, it’s more fundamental than that and although it doesn’t explicitly state it, it alludes to a politics which just doesn’t work anymore. The authors are American and the story they tell is primarily that of America – its history and development, its dreams and its ideals. But under the surface, the story they tell is about every democracy on the planet. The abundance they refer to though isn’t about stuff and things – it’s about how we could and should strive to live a good life. These years we have on this planet are the most valuable things we will ever possess, the dream of living the best lives we can is not political, it’s just human nature, but it is the politicians who we elect and govern who should sell us the dreams which drive us on to live the best lives we can. Abundance is storytelling about the need for more optimism and a little less cynicism – we need to be sold dreams, not problems.

There’s always a book that exists for everyone: maybe a twisting romantasy novel is your pick, or perhaps you love to connect with nature. There’s even books for little ones that teach sign language and books for slightly older children that double up as fun science experiments!
