I opened a book and in I strode
Now nobody can find me.

A small group of us here at the shop were talking the other day about ‘connections’ – that attribute of being able to (and wanting to) stay in touch with those around you. In our case, the connections in that conversation were about how we share what we love once we’ve read it. Book recommendations from real Booksellers are worth their weight in gold, the connections through which those recommendations move are valuable. Reading a book is a significant investment in time, and although an enjoyable one, that investment has to be right – get it right and a good book will pay dividends long after it’s been read. Those five or six hours it may take to read a book are worth way more to you than the price printed on the cover (how books came to be judged by price is one of the oddities of buying books on the internet!). If reading was a purely financial transaction, those five or so hours would be worth more than sixty pounds at the current minimum wage. Booksellers as Financial Advisers may not be wise in the strictest sense, but when it comes to investing time, then seek out a ‘Bookinancial Adviser’ (?!) – they’ll save a fortune you and make you a fortune!

‘I Opened a Book’ by Julia Donaldson

I opened a book and in I strode
Now nobody can find me.
I’ve left my chair, my house, my road,
My town and my world behind me.

I’m wearing the cloak, I’ve slipped on the ring,
I’ve swallowed the magic potion.
I’ve fought with a dragon, dined with a king
And dived in a bottomless ocean.

I opened a book and made some friends.
I shared their tears and laughter
And followed their road with its bumps and bends
To the happily ever after.

I finished my book and out I came.
The cloak can no longer hide me.
My chair and my house are just the same,
But I have a book inside me.
