Books are one of life’s glues which can bind us together.

And so here we are, the end of October, the clocks about to fall backwards and darkness of the evening will soon be chasing down the afternoon light to the distant horizon. Despite the unseasonably warm temperatures (wish the grass would stop growing!), there is the distinct feeling of passing through the gate and into another season. Those with school age children are about to come to the end of the half term holiday – taking the final bend and entering the home straight towards Christmas. Of all the half-term holidays, the Autumn one always seems to be the busiest in the book shop: the chatter of curious minds (a bookshop will always be a magnet to the curious) has an edge of magical excitement.

The phrase ‘pay it forward’ has its roots in the act of kindness. Mostly heard in coffee shops, it’s something which we have experienced in our shop with books – the kindness of strangers to buy a book for another stranger, particularly a child, to ‘pay it forward’, is a wonderful thing to experience – that it happens in our shop fills us with joy and with pride that books are one of life’s glues which can bind us together.

‘I Opened a Book’ by Julia Donaldson – from ‘The Big Amazing Poetry Book’, a wonderful collection of poetry for young minds, chosen by Gaby Morgan and illustrated by Chris Riddell – you can find a copy on our website HERE

I opened a book and in I strode
Now nobody can find me.
I’ve left my chair, my house, my road,
My town and my world behind me.

I’m wearing the cloak, I’ve slipped on the ring,
I’ve swallowed the magic potion.
I’ve fought with a dragon, dined with a king
And dived in a bottomless ocean.

I opened a book and made some friends.
I shared their tears and laughter
And followed their road with its bumps and bends
To the happily ever after.

I finished my book and out I came.
The cloak can no longer hide me.
My chair and my house are just the same,
But I have a book inside me.
