As the seasons roll by, they work in concert to create the balance which keeps us grounded and fair.

The last few gallantly stubborn leaves are hanging on but the rest have capitulated and fallen to earth. Mulch, slowly returning to the soil, creating the nutrients ready to be drawn up again through the roots next spring, forming the buds and subsequent leaves – the cycle repeats. In the meantime, the spindly branches of the bare trees creating slightly sinister silhouettes against leaden skies – ‘ah, Mr Winter, hello again, it seems like only yesterday when you were last passing this way?’ His bags of cold and vats of rain are troublesome and awkward, but they are essential elements – the harshness of Winter is the necessary component of character, it helps us appreciate the sweetness and warmth of the Spring & Summer. As the seasons roll by, they work in concert to create the balance which keeps us grounded and fair.

I’ve News For You – Anonymous (from ‘Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright’ mentioned below)

I’ve news for you
the stag bellows,
winter’s snow,
summer’s gone,

high, cold wind,
sun low in sky,
short days,
heavy seas,

deep red bracken’s
skeletal form,
barnacle goose’s
customed call,

cold has seized
the bird’s wings,
icy season:
that’s my news.

Coles Signed Editions make wonderful gifts – they even come ready wrapped and each with a Coles Signed Edition gift tag. Over the next few weeks we’ll be suggesting a few of our favourites – books which (just like the BBC) will ‘Inform, Educate and Entertain’ and of course, being a book, it will be a gift to cherish.

A few of us here are of an age to remember Tony Hadley and Midge Ure banging out the tunes with Spandau Ballet & Ultravox – their photographic books will peel away the years; as will the work of photographer Kevin Cummings who recorded the journey of Joy Division, from Warsaw through to New Order; who’s going to come out top in the jungle this weekend? Ant & Dec add some fabulous humour to whatever the outcome; the very beautiful ‘Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright’, a collection of poems for children and illustrated by Britta Teckentrup, is one of those ‘keepsake’ books which create childhood memories; we have a dressing room full of entertaining actors; we have an ocean full of knowledge; from a stocking filler to a coffee table monster, there’s a Coles Signed Edition for all.
