Now, astute communication, both with patients and with colleagues, forms a fundamental element of holistic surgical practice and comprises a core component of the 'Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons' that are increasingly recognised in modern surgical practice. Studies have clearly demonstrated that education in communication improves patient outcomes and satisfaction. Several frameworks have been described, to facilitate good communication in certain scenarios. This book is aimed at medical students, surgical trainees and surgical consultants internationally. It is relevant to every-day practice, examinations and OSCEs, such as medical finals, MRCS, FRCS and international equivalents, and interviews where role play is often featured.

Good communication is required during each patient interaction: history taking, explanation, consent, breaking bad news, and managing difficult encounters such as the demanding or angry patient. Good communication with patients improves patient trust, compliance and overall satisfaction, reduces complaints and malpractice claims.
Good communication is not an inborn behaviour; it is a learned skill that is based on key principles. Studies have clearly demonstrated that education in communication improves patient outcomes and satisfaction. Several frameworks have been described, to facilitate good communication in certain scenarios: SPIKES for breaking bad news, SBAR for handover, surgical briefs and de-briefs, to name a few.
About the Author: Mr. Benjamin Patel graduated from Oxford University with a first-class degree in 2018. He has been awarded prizes for achievement from Oxford University, The Association of Surgeons in Training, The British Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and Healthcare Education England. Deciding to undertake a career in academic surgery, he was ranked in the top 1% of applicants to core surgical training and is a current plastic surgery-themed trainee in Bristol. He has published multiple papers in peer reviewed journals, textbook chapters and presented at scientific conferences internationally. During his Royal College of England Membership examinations, he achieved 97% in the communication domain, compared to an average of 75% Professor Abhay Rane OBE FRCSGlasg(Urol) graduated from Poona University in India in 1983, and trained in urology in the United Kingdom and the United States. He has been a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust since 1999. He is Visiting Professor at Canterbury Christchurch University, Kent and holds adjunct chairs at two prestigious US Universities: the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York. An advisor to the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) he has also contributed as the national urology representative to the NICE Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee. A former Council member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS), he represented BAUS at the International Member Committee of the American Urological Association for a decade. He is current Surgical Vice President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, and a Director of the Endourology Society. Professor Rane was appointed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in the 2014 Honours List for services to laparoscopic surgery.

UK Delivery
Orders for delivery in the UK are normally despatched by Royal Mail, using the RM 48 Tracked Service with most orders delivered to you within a few days of placing your order with us. For larger parcels, Courier and Signed For delivery services may be used. Signed Books are shipped in our specially made book mailing cartons, with the books themselves wrapped in paper to protect them. Sometimes we may ship your order in several parts, particularly if you have 'Pre-Order' titles in your order or titles which are held in stock with our publishing partners.
The Really Important Bit: Because we use tracked, courier and signed for delivery services, please use an address at which your parcel can be received during the normal working day, for example, you may want to have your order delivered to your work address if you're not at home during the day.

Another Really Important Bit: There are a number of Postcodes in the UK for which we will need to charge a shipping supplement, this will be calculated once we know the size and weight of the shipment. For these orders we will contact customers to agree a suitable and economic method of shipping. There may also be additional time required for delivery to some areas of the United Kingdom. Where possible, we will ship book orders (under 2kg) by Royal Mail to all UK postcodes. Large multiple book orders and books over 2kg are often shipped via APC Overnight or similar, regardless of Postcode.

From 1st July 2021, VAT will be applicable to those EU countries where VAT is applied to books - this additional charge will be collected by Fed Ex (or the Royal Mail) at the time of delivery.

All overseas orders are shipped using a 'signed for' courier service - please provide an address at which your parcel can be signed for on receipt. We use the same packaging materials for our overseas deliveries as we do those in the UK. In some cases, particularly large and heavy books, or books being shipped to remote areas, may incur an additional shipping charge - if this is the case with your order, we'll notify you as quickly as possible of these charges and to arrange the additional payment. You can of course cancel your order with an immediate refund should you not wish to accept these additional costs. Shipments to overseas territories may incur additional Duty & Tax costs which could be requested by Fed Ex at the time of delivery. These costs may vary from country to country and are not within our control and will be in addition to the costs paid to us for your delivery. Collect in Person at Coles Books

If you're coming to Coles by car, why not take advantage of the 2 hours free parking at Sainsbury's Pioneer Square - just follow the signs for Pioneer Square as you drive into Bicester and park in the multi-storey car park above the supermarket. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. You don't need to shop in Sainsbury's to get the free parking!
