First Anywhere – The Story of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry 1909–1919 by Philomena Liggins - Signed Edition

Hardback Edition
New & Unread

First Anywhere is written against the social, political and military backdrop of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and tells the story of the formation of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry, whose members swapped horses for motor cars and went to war.

At a time when middle and upper-class ladies were expected to stay at home and support their husbands in their careers, an ex-sergeant major working in London’s Smithfield Meat Market put his plan into action. Edward Baker had served with Kitchener’s army during the Sudan campaign where he believed lives could have been saved if nurses on horseback had galloped out onto the battlefield to administer first aid.

In 1907 Baker adopted the rank of ‘Captain’ and began recruiting young ladies of independent means to join his cavalry corps. They paid an enrolment fee of 1 guinea (21 shilling); provided their own military style uniforms and covered all their expenses, which included training in first aid, shooting, signalling and cavalry drill. However, in 1909 some of the ladies began to question Baker’s financial acumen and, after a failed coup, left the Corps.

With membership declining two grocers’ daughters, Lilian Franklin and Grace Smith, took command. They gradually increased membership and the Corps gained the respect of those military men they trained alongside. However, on the outbreak of the First World War, some members of the military hierarchy deemed women were not welcome in the theatre of war. Undaunted, Grace purchased a motor ambulance and in October 1914 she and Lilian took the first F.A.N.Y unit to Calais. They quickly set to work and over the following five years F.A.N.Y units ran two hospitals and a convalescent home; they served in a Regimental Aid Post; delivered medical supplies to First Aid Posts and woolly hats, socks and scarves to the men in the trenches, and transported casualties along the evaluation chains from the front line to the ports of Boulogne and Calais. In 1916 they became the first women to drive for the British Army, and in 1917 they served with American and French military and civil authorities along the Marne. After the war they served in Belgium, France and Germany where they helped to repatriate Allied prisoners of war and civilian refugees. Theirs was not an easy ride, they faced challenges with compassion, and overcame adversity with modesty and good humour. As testimony to their bravery, amongst the many medals the ladies of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry received were seventeen Military Medals.
