‘Many of you know that I am a martial artist by choice, an actor by profession, and, by daily actualizing my potentiality through soulful discoveries and daily exercising, I hope to become also an artist of life.’ – Bruce Lee
Shortly before he started work on his biggest film, Enter the Dragon, Bruce Lee wrote a series of letters titled 'In My Own Process', reflecting on key areas of his life: defining success as an actor, his life as a martial artist, his search for knowledge and what it means to be 'Bruce Lee'. Although written in 1973, these essay notes help introduce the chapters of Lee's career chronicled within the limited edition. From developing his philosophy of Jeet Kune Do, to his first screen test, to his big Hollywood breakthrough, Bruce's reflections take us back to these defining moments.
Alongside an extensive commentary in Lee's own words, interviews with his friends and family add personal insight, while contributions from today's leading figures in music, film, and sport will examine the long-lasting impact of Lee's incredible career and legacy. Those taking part include rapper and actor Snoop Dogg, Oscar-winning movie director Ang Lee, and basketball superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and introduced by the world-renowned professional skateboarder, Tony Hawk.
In partnership with the family of Bruce Lee, Genesis is proud to present In My Own Process, the official book documenting the life and work of one of the most significant cultural icons of all time, Bruce Lee. His blockbuster movies, pioneering martial arts practice and motivational philosophy continue to inspire millions worldwide. Published in the fiftieth year of his passing, In My Own Process celebrates Lee’s legacy as a martial artist, actor and philosopher, offering readers the definitive book of his spectacular career.
'Bruce Lee was a bridge between East and West who introduced Chinese kung fu to the world, a scientist of combat and an iconic performing artist who revolutionized both the martial arts and action cinema.' - Ang Lee
Collating previously unpublished photographs, film stills, journals, drawings, teachings and writings, In My Own Process opens up the Bruce Lee archives. Hundreds of fascinating items are being shared, many for the first time, including handwritten poems from Lee's early years in the US; personal affirmations and diary entries; movie scripts; workout regimes; teaching notes; martial arts drawings and diagrams; philosophical observations and the various drafts of his essay which gives the book its title, In My Own Process. Presented in their original format, Bruce Lee's writings give a unique insight into the man behind the martial arts films.
Illustrated with a wealth of stunning imagery, Bruce Lee is seen in action and behind the scenes on the sets of classic movies such as The Big Boss, Fist of Fury, Game of Death, Way of the Dragon and Enter the Dragon, as well as some of Lee's earliest films in Hong Kong. Rare photographs from the Lee Family Archive record his martial arts classes with students such as Jesse Glover and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, personal at-home workouts, and private moments away from the Hollywood spotlight.
In My Own Process is hand-signed by Bruce Lee's daughter, Shannon Lee, wife, Linda Lee Cadwell and pro-skater, Tony Hawk.
Numbered 351 to 2,000, the Collector copies are bound in black cloth and feature an on-set action photo of Bruce Lee from the Lee Family Archive. A dragon motif, drawn during his time working on Enter the Dragon features on the back.
Collector copies will be presented in a clamshell box with a selection of exclusive content, including an enamel pin, a facsimile page of Bruce Lee's essay In My Own Process, two fabric patches and a leather bookmark inscribed with a quote taken from one of Bruce Lee's notebooks. Inset into the cover of the box is a metallic gold core symbol medallion, with gold foil lettering on the reverse, viewable from the inside cover of the box. An 8" x 10" estate-stamped print is also included which features Bruce Lee wearing his iconic yellow jumpsuit.

About Bruce Lee: Bruce Jun Fan Lee was born in San Francisco in the hour and the year of the Dragon, a powerful symbol in Chinese astrology and a strong omen of the life he was to live. Raised in Hong Kong, Bruce began diligently studying Chinese gung fu at the age of 13. Bruce’s early love of acting led to appearances in 20 films before leaving Hong Kong. In 1959, at the age of 18 with $100 in his pocket, Bruce headed back to San Francisco. In the years that followed, he majored in philosophy at University of Washington, supported himself as a dance instructor and gung fu teacher, met and married his wife Linda, and opened multiple martial arts schools on the west coast. Fate stepped in when Bruce’s otherworldly gung fu skills collided with an opportunity to return to acting in the 1966 TV series “The Green Hornet”. The birth of his two children, film roles catapulting him to success, writing, directing and developing his own martial art of “Jeet Kune Do” continued to fill his years until 1973, when he died in Hong Kong from an allergic reaction to a pain medication. Lee was 32.
