Since the days of the Indus Valley Civilization, coastal regions along the Indian shores have been deeply engaged in maritime activities. Early watercraft used on the seas included reed boats, various types of floats, and the uniquely distinctive 'kattumarans,' crafted by tying logs together. While these were simple wash-afloat vessels, more advanced boats based on the principle of air displacement emerged, such as dugouts and pseudo-dugouts. Over time, plank-built boats came into use. Initially keel-less, these boats evolved into sturdy keeled vessels as their size increased, enabling them to navigate sea waters more effectively.The design and form of these boats varied regionally across different segments of the coast. Early on, planks were stitched together firmly, but in the last few centuries, nailed construction replaced stitching. Sails were introduced early, and steering mechanisms, such as outriggers and balance boards, were employed to manoeuvre the boats when needed. The choice of timber varied by region, influenced by its quality, durability, and strength to withstand the challenges of saline sea water. Over time, the boats grew in size, and by 1500 AD, Indian vessels reached impressive capacities of 1,000 tons or more. Some boats featured double-ended designs, while others had square, rounded, or transom sterns. Many were open-decked, but some included decks and cabins to accommodate passengers.The intricacy of these boats' designs and forms reflected the remarkable skills and expertise of master carpenters. What is particularly fascinating is that these master builders relied entirely on inherited wisdom and their own craftsmanship, without any drawn plans or formal architectural designs. Arunachalam will be fondly remembered for his scholarly contributions to Indian Geography, especially in the field of Geomorphology and Cartography and for opening new vistas of academic collaboration and research in the professional field of history of Indian navigation.About Maritime History Society:The Maritime History Society (MHS), an academic initiative of the Western Naval Command of the Indian Navy was established on 12 May 1978 by the late Vice Admiral MP Awati with a vision to promote the study of India's maritime history. MHS has grown into a leading research organisation dedicated to exploring the country's rich maritime heritage and naval legacy. As part of its academic mission, MHS undertakes a wide range of activities including publication of scholarly books, hosting seminars, lectures, workshops and curating maritime-themed museums, exhibitions and heritage projects including the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal, Gujarat. The Society also maintains a well- curated gallery with over 2,000 artefacts, a reference library and digital presence featuring blogs and display of artefacts. Its collaboration with Talyor and Francis under the Routledge Revival series further extends its educational outreach. UK Delivery
Orders for delivery in the UK are normally despatched by Royal Mail, using the RM 48 Tracked Service with most orders delivered to you within a few days of placing your order with us. For larger parcels, Courier and Signed For delivery services may be used. Signed Books are shipped in our specially made book mailing cartons, with the books themselves wrapped in paper to protect them. Sometimes we may ship your order in several parts, particularly if you have 'Pre-Order' titles in your order or titles which are held in stock with our publishing partners.
The Really Important Bit: Because we use tracked, courier and signed for delivery services, please use an address at which your parcel can be received during the normal working day, for example, you may want to have your order delivered to your work address if you're not at home during the day.

Another Really Important Bit: There are a number of Postcodes in the UK for which we will need to charge a shipping supplement, this will be calculated once we know the size and weight of the shipment. Where possible, we will ship book orders (under 2kg) by Royal Mail to all UK postcodes. Large multiple book orders and books over 2kg are often shipped via APC Overnight or similar, regardless of Postcode.

We use the same packaging materials for our overseas deliveries as we do those in the UK. In some cases, particularly large and heavy books, or books being shipped to remote areas, may incur an additional shipping charge - if this is the case with your order, we'll notify you as quickly as possible of these charges and to arrange the additional payment. You can of course cancel your order with an immediate refund should you not wish to accept these additional costs. Shipments to overseas territories may incur additional Duty & Tax costs which could be requested by Fed Ex at the time of delivery. If you're coming to Coles by car, why not take advantage of the 2 hours free parking at Sainsbury's Pioneer Square - just follow the signs for Pioneer Square as you drive into Bicester and park in the multi-storey car park above the supermarket. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. You don't need to shop in Sainsbury's to get the free parking!
