This book provides an introduction to nanophotonics, a newly emerged and rapidly evolving field combining optics, quantum physics, material sciences, and electrical engineering. It illustrates the theoretical foundations as well as the major advances in the field based on artificial metallic and dielectric nanostructures.
The aim of this textbook is to provide an overview of nanophotonics, a discipline which was developed around the turn of the millennium. This unique and rapidly evolving subject area is the result of a collaboration between various scientific communities working on different aspects of light-matter interaction at the nanoscale. These include near-field optics and super-resolution microscopy, photonic crystals, diffractive optics, plasmonics, optoelectronics, synthesis of metallic and semiconductor nanoparticles, two-dimensional materials, and metamaterials.
The book is aimed at graduate students with a background in physics, electrical engineering, material science, or chemistry, as well as lecturers and researchers working within these fields.
About the Author: Henri Benisty received his PhD in electrochemistry in 1989 in Paris, working on the photonics of semiconductor integrated optics devices and LEDs enhanced with microcavities and two-dimensional photonic crystals, with the aim to improve either light confinement or light extraction. He is the co-founder of the French startup Genewave (now merged with Finnish Mobidiag), which works on fluorescence biochips. He has contributed to studies of sensors featuring a resonant waveguide grating response in various contexts and was instrumental to introducing the the idea of plasmonic losses within the recently introduced topic of parity-time symmetry in optics. Jean-Jacques Greffet is an alumnus of the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Paris-Saclay. He received his PhD in solid state physics in 1988 from Université Paris-Sud working in light scattering by rough surfaces. Between 1994 and 2005, he worked on the theory of image formation in near-field optics. Since 1998, he has made a number of seminal contributions to the field of thermal radiation at the nanoscale including the demonstration of coherent thermal sources and the prediction and measurement of giant radiative heat transfer at the nanoscale due to surface phonon polaritons. Since 2000, he has contributed to the field of quantum plasmonics and light emission with nanoantennas and metasurfaces. Philippe Lalanne is an alumnus of the Ecole Normale Supérieure de St Cloud. Currently, he is a CNRS researcher working at Bordeaux University. He is an expert in nanoscale electrodynamics, with an emphasis on modelling and theory. His current research is devoted to understanding how light interacts with subwavelength structures to demonstrate novel optical functionalities. He has launched new modal theories and has pioneered the development of large-NA metalenses with high-index nanostructures in the 1990s.

UK Delivery
Orders for delivery in the UK are normally despatched by Royal Mail, using the RM 48 Tracked Service with most orders delivered to you within a few days of placing your order with us. For larger parcels, Courier and Signed For delivery services may be used. Signed Books are shipped in our specially made book mailing cartons, with the books themselves wrapped in paper to protect them. Sometimes we may ship your order in several parts, particularly if you have 'Pre-Order' titles in your order or titles which are held in stock with our publishing partners.
The Really Important Bit: Because we use tracked, courier and signed for delivery services, please use an address at which your parcel can be received during the normal working day, for example, you may want to have your order delivered to your work address if you're not at home during the day.

Another Really Important Bit: There are a number of Postcodes in the UK for which we will need to charge a shipping supplement, this will be calculated once we know the size and weight of the shipment. Where possible, we will ship book orders (under 2kg) by Royal Mail to all UK postcodes. Large multiple book orders and books over 2kg are often shipped via APC Overnight or similar, regardless of Postcode.

All overseas orders are shipped using a 'signed for' courier service - please provide an address at which your parcel can be signed for on receipt. We use the same packaging materials for our overseas deliveries as we do those in the UK. In some cases, particularly large and heavy books, or books being shipped to remote areas, may incur an additional shipping charge - if this is the case with your order, we'll notify you as quickly as possible of these charges and to arrange the additional payment. You can of course cancel your order with an immediate refund should you not wish to accept these additional costs. Shipments to overseas territories may incur additional Duty & Tax costs which could be requested by Fed Ex at the time of delivery. These costs may vary from country to country and are not within our control and will be in addition to the costs paid to us for your delivery. If you're coming to Coles by car, why not take advantage of the 2 hours free parking at Sainsbury's Pioneer Square - just follow the signs for Pioneer Square as you drive into Bicester and park in the multi-storey car park above the supermarket. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. You don't need to shop in Sainsbury's to get the free parking!
