Numerical Methods for Engineering and Data Science guides students in implementing numerical methods in engineering and in assessing their limitations and accuracy, particularly using algorithms from the field of machine learning.The textbook presents key principles building upon the fundamentals of engineering mathematics. It explores classical techniques for solving linear and nonlinear equations, computing definite integrals, and differential equations. Emphasis is placed both on the theoretical underpinnings, with in depth discussion of the sources of errors, and in the practical implementation of these using Octave. Each chapter is supplemented with examples and exercises designed to reinforce the concepts and encourage hands-on practice. The second half of the book transitions into the realm of machine learning. The authors introduce basic concepts and algorithms, such as linear regression and classification. As in the first part of this book, a special focus is on the solid understanding of errors and practical implementation of the algorithms. In particular the concepts of bias, variance and noise are discussed in detail and illustrated with numerous examples.This book will be of interest to students in all areas of engineering, alongside mathematicians and scientists in industry looking to improve their knowledge of this important field.
About the Author: Rolf Wuthrich, ing, PhD, is a professor at the department of Mechanical Industrial and Aerospace engineering as well at the department of Chemical and Material Engineering at Concordia University. He earned is Master of Engineering Physics in High Energy Physics from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Technologie de Lausanne (Switzerland) and his PhD in advanced manufacturing and electrochemistry from the same university in 2002. His current research focus is on advanced manufacturing and digital transformation in manufacturing where he is leading a research laboratory on advanced manufacturing with special focus on electrochemical technologies meeting the demand of Industry 4.0. He develops strategies involving machine learning to enhance performances of manufacturing processes and to reduce machining overhead. His teaching interests include numerical methods, modeling and fundamental courses form mechanical engineering. He is heavily involved in the development of online teaching strategies. Dr. Carole El Ayoubi, an accomplished engineering professional, currently serves as the Director of Education at the Concordia Institute of Aerospace Design and Innovation (CIADI). In this pivotal role, she also spearheads two undergraduate programs, namely Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. She is also a senior lecturer in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Aerospace Engineering at Concordia University. Dr. El Ayoubi earned her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in aerospace applications, from Concordia University in 2014. With a rich background as an Aerodynamics Engineer at Pratt & Whitney Canada prior to her doctoral pursuits, she brings invaluable industry experience to her academic leadership. Dr. El Ayoubi is dedicated to fostering multidisciplinary teaching methods and elevating the standards of aerospace education at Concordia University. Passionate about accessibility in higher education, Dr. El Ayoubi firmly believes in making education available to all. Her enthusiasm extends to impactful outreach activities, showcasing her dedication to inspiring the next generation of aerospace professionals.

UK Delivery
Orders for delivery in the UK are normally despatched by Royal Mail, using the RM 48 Tracked Service with most orders delivered to you within a few days of placing your order with us. For larger parcels, Courier and Signed For delivery services may be used. Signed Books are shipped in our specially made book mailing cartons, with the books themselves wrapped in paper to protect them. Sometimes we may ship your order in several parts, particularly if you have 'Pre-Order' titles in your order or titles which are held in stock with our publishing partners.
The Really Important Bit: Because we use tracked, courier and signed for delivery services, please use an address at which your parcel can be received during the normal working day, for example, you may want to have your order delivered to your work address if you're not at home during the day.

Another Really Important Bit: There are a number of Postcodes in the UK for which we will need to charge a shipping supplement, this will be calculated once we know the size and weight of the shipment. For these orders we will contact customers to agree a suitable and economic method of shipping. There may also be additional time required for delivery to some areas of the United Kingdom. Where possible, we will ship book orders (under 2kg) by Royal Mail to all UK postcodes. Large multiple book orders and books over 2kg are often shipped via APC Overnight or similar, regardless of Postcode.

From 1st July 2021, VAT will be applicable to those EU countries where VAT is applied to books - this additional charge will be collected by Fed Ex (or the Royal Mail) at the time of delivery.

All overseas orders are shipped using a 'signed for' courier service - please provide an address at which your parcel can be signed for on receipt. We use the same packaging materials for our overseas deliveries as we do those in the UK. In some cases, particularly large and heavy books, or books being shipped to remote areas, may incur an additional shipping charge - if this is the case with your order, we'll notify you as quickly as possible of these charges and to arrange the additional payment. You can of course cancel your order with an immediate refund should you not wish to accept these additional costs. Shipments to overseas territories may incur additional Duty & Tax costs which could be requested by Fed Ex at the time of delivery. If you're coming to Coles by car, why not take advantage of the 2 hours free parking at Sainsbury's Pioneer Square - just follow the signs for Pioneer Square as you drive into Bicester and park in the multi-storey car park above the supermarket. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. You don't need to shop in Sainsbury's to get the free parking!
