This textbook provides a compelling, comprehensive, and up-to-date course on quantum computing. The underlying physics is developed in detail in the opening chapters, and the heart of the book then presents, in a clear and mathematically rigorous manner, all of the most important quantum algorithms and communication protocols.
The discovery of physical systems that exhibit what we now call quantum mechanical behaviour was unquestionably one of the most astonishing events in the history of science. No less remarkable was the realisation that quantum mechanics presents a much more powerful paradigm for computation and information processing than its classical counterpart. This textbook explores the incredible, but somewhat subtle, power of quantum computation, starting with a thorough in-depth exposition of quantum physics. Quantum mechanical behaviour is formalised by the postulates of quantum mechanics, which give rise to some startling results, such as the Bell inequalities. From the postulates of quantum mechanics, the quantum circuit model can also be derived, which enables a visual intuition for quantum computation to be acquired without any loss of rigour in the accompanying analysis. Getting to the principal subject-matter of the book, the question of quantum advantage is tackled head-on, with the theoretical evidence that quantum computation does indeed offer a more powerful computation paradigm, paired with cautionary results that certain classes of circuits can be proven to enjoy no such quantum advantage. The book then presents a canon of the most important quantum algorithms and communication protocols that have been discovered in the relatively brief history of this exciting, emerging field. Starting with historically important query algorithms, 'classic' results such as Grover's and Shor's algorithm are then covered, followed by more recent breakthroughs including the quantum algorithm for solving linear systems (HHL) and the quantum singular value transformation. The final chapter of the book addresses the subject of quantum error correction, building up to the celebrated 'threshold theorem', which implies that the theoretical promises of quantum computation can one day be realised on actual quantum computers.
About the Author: Steven Herbert is an Affiliated Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Technology at the University of Cambridge and Head of Quantum Algorithms at Quantinuum, the world's largest integrated quantum company. He has MA, MEng and PhD degrees from the University of Cambridge, and was previously a by-fellow at Churchill College, Cambridge. He has held research positions at the Universities of Edinburgh and Oxford, also spending a sabbatical at Imperial College, London. He is known for his work on fast stabiliser circuit simulation, quantum topological data analysis, Fourier analysis for quantum circuit decomposition, and pioneering the application of AI to quantum compilation.

UK Delivery
Orders for delivery in the UK are normally despatched by Royal Mail, using the RM 48 Tracked Service with most orders delivered to you within a few days of placing your order with us. For larger parcels, Courier and Signed For delivery services may be used. Signed Books are shipped in our specially made book mailing cartons, with the books themselves wrapped in paper to protect them. Sometimes we may ship your order in several parts, particularly if you have 'Pre-Order' titles in your order or titles which are held in stock with our publishing partners.
The Really Important Bit: Because we use tracked, courier and signed for delivery services, please use an address at which your parcel can be received during the normal working day, for example, you may want to have your order delivered to your work address if you're not at home during the day.

Where possible, we will ship book orders (under 2kg) by Royal Mail to all UK postcodes. Large multiple book orders and books over 2kg are often shipped via APC Overnight or similar, regardless of Postcode.

All overseas orders are shipped using a 'signed for' courier service - please provide an address at which your parcel can be signed for on receipt. In some cases, particularly large and heavy books, or books being shipped to remote areas, may incur an additional shipping charge - if this is the case with your order, we'll notify you as quickly as possible of these charges and to arrange the additional payment. You can of course cancel your order with an immediate refund should you not wish to accept these additional costs. Shipments to overseas territories may incur additional Duty & Tax costs which could be requested by Fed Ex at the time of delivery. If you're coming to Coles by car, why not take advantage of the 2 hours free parking at Sainsbury's Pioneer Square - just follow the signs for Pioneer Square as you drive into Bicester and park in the multi-storey car park above the supermarket. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. You don't need to shop in Sainsbury's to get the free parking!
