Ongoing concerns regarding greenhouse gas-related environmental effects, energy security, and the rising costs of conventional energy sources has led to sustained interest and growth in solar energy in general, and photovoltaics in particular. Exploring state-of-the-art developments from a practical point of view, Quantum and Nanotechnology for Photovoltaics is the 2nd Edition of the book and examines issues in increasing efficiency, decreasing costs, and how these two goals can be achieved in a single photovoltaic device leveraging emergent quantum and nanoscale phenomena. The book provides fundamental background, including new chapters on quantum physics, hot carrier solar cells, luminescent solar concentrators, and additional topics, and places research approaches within the proper physical context as related to photovoltaics performance enhancement. It reviews the applications of devices and their performance requirements, followed by coverage of thin films and advanced band structure concepts for obtaining efficiencies above the Shockley-Queisser single bandgap efficiency limit of ~31%. The editor and contributors also discuss the basic optical properties of nanostructured materials as related to photovoltaics applications and describes quantum hot carrier device physics related to performance. They then explore recent literature in the application of various classes of nanostructures to photovoltaics. The book covers solar cells based on hybrid organic-inorganic nanocomposites structures, quantum wells, nanowires/tubes, and quantum dots. It also discusses the use of nanoparticles/quantum dots to enhance the performance of conventional solar cells and quantum-enhanced luminescent solar concentrators. Each chapter summarizes the historical development for the nanostructure class under consideration, applications beyond photovoltaics, and the major synthetic methods, followed by a critique of leading works that have employed the particular quantum and/or nanostructure type. The book examines the advantages of each quantum/nanostructure approach and the remaining technical challenges, with an emphasis on possible future areas of research interest. This work is intended for academic and industrial researchers developing new photovoltaic technologies, primarily at the graduate level and beyond, though senior level undergraduates with appropriate training in physics and materials science will also benefit from this book. Many of the chapters also constitute useful background knowledge for managers and decision makers in companies developing advanced PV, energy, and materials technologies.
About the Author: Loucas Tsakalakos is a Director of Engineering at Coherent Corp. in Bloomfield, CT, USA. Tsakalakos joined the General Electric Research Center in Niskayuna, NY in 2000, where he led programs in advanced sensor systems, nanotechnology, next generation solar technologies, and worked within GE Energy to develop solar energy products. Dr. Tsakalakos joined L3Harris in 2021 as a Senior Engineering Manager, Electrical Engineering, in the Space & Sensors division. In 2023 Loucas joined Coherent Corp. as a Director of Engineering within the Lasers Segment. He is a member of Tau Beta P, is the author or co-author of over 50 journal, conference proceedings, and book chapter publications, has given over 70 presentations at international conferences and workshops, and holds 19 U.S. patents. Dr. Tsakalakos is a member of the Materials Research Society (MRS) and the Society of Photo-Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).

UK Delivery
Orders for delivery in the UK are normally despatched by Royal Mail, using the RM 48 Tracked Service with most orders delivered to you within a few days of placing your order with us. For larger parcels, Courier and Signed For delivery services may be used. Signed Books are shipped in our specially made book mailing cartons, with the books themselves wrapped in paper to protect them. Sometimes we may ship your order in several parts, particularly if you have 'Pre-Order' titles in your order or titles which are held in stock with our publishing partners.
The Really Important Bit: Because we use tracked, courier and signed for delivery services, please use an address at which your parcel can be received during the normal working day, for example, you may want to have your order delivered to your work address if you're not at home during the day.

Another Really Important Bit: There are a number of Postcodes in the UK for which we will need to charge a shipping supplement, this will be calculated once we know the size and weight of the shipment. For these orders we will contact customers to agree a suitable and economic method of shipping. There may also be additional time required for delivery to some areas of the United Kingdom. Where possible, we will ship book orders (under 2kg) by Royal Mail to all UK postcodes. Large multiple book orders and books over 2kg are often shipped via APC Overnight or similar, regardless of Postcode.

All overseas orders are shipped using a 'signed for' courier service - please provide an address at which your parcel can be signed for on receipt. You can of course cancel your order with an immediate refund should you not wish to accept these additional costs. Shipments to overseas territories may incur additional Duty & Tax costs which could be requested by Fed Ex at the time of delivery. If you're coming to Coles by car, why not take advantage of the 2 hours free parking at Sainsbury's Pioneer Square - just follow the signs for Pioneer Square as you drive into Bicester and park in the multi-storey car park above the supermarket. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. You don't need to shop in Sainsbury's to get the free parking!
