The Beer Lover's Guide to Cider by Beth Demmon
Hard cider makes up a small slice of the alcohol beverage industry, but with ongoing double-digit growth, it's clear consumer tastes will continue to shape the industry favorably towards the burgeoning segment. Thanks to increased exploration of flavors, continued rising demand for gluten-free alternatives, and decreased brand and specific segment loyalty, more people who previously defined themselves as solely beer, wine, or spirits drinkers are seeking fresh alternatives like cider.
Over the past twenty years, the craft beer industry has exploded. Today, there are nearly 9,000 craft breweries in the United States alone (with an estimated 2,500-3,000 breweries are in the process of opening), an almost 8,000% increase since 1975. Studies show that 42% of American drinkers describe beer as their preferred beverage, guzzling an average of 26.2 gallons annually.
Comparatively, the craft cider industry in the U.S. is in its infancy, with around 1,000 cideries5 currently operating. Even in its nascent state, American cider has grown nearly ten times in size over the past ten years. Recent mentions in print outlets such as Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler demonstrate a growing interest in domestic cider, and market projections indicate a jump from $2.16 billion to $4.66 billion in the next five years.
This book will be of primary interest to men and women aged 21-45. Gen Z and younger Millennials are more likely to move fluidly between beverage alcohol segments than older Millennials and Gen X, but even seasoned beer drinkers have shown themselves to be increasingly more open to alcohol alternatives. The Beer Lover's Guide to Cider will appeal to both craft beer aficionados well-versed in beer styles as well as exploratory cider drinkers.
