The Extasie is a compelling book of love poems with its lyrical roots deep in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the rural traditions of the nineteenth. Among New Zealand poet John Gallas's spirit guides are John Clare and, in particular, Wyatt and Donne, writers from our poetry's wittiest and most ecstatic age. But the book's heart is set firmly in the twenty-first century. Its two parts follow the seasons of a revelatory love through different weathers and forms. The poems follow the sequence of their composition, so we register the intimacies, forced separations, complexities and climaxes as on a lyrical fever chart. Things are never still or static, everywhere is growth and wonder - birds, tides, skies, trees, sheep, planets and flowers: a celebration of the natural world, and a seeing together. The eye of the poet is always turned to the world: how the world is seen and felt is a sufficient record of the partners' intimacy.
Gallas's language is marked by vigorous verbs, arresting inversions, a world of process and mutation, of transformation about one constant belief. It is hard to find poetry so at ease and at home with the particular detail of rural England, of a Lincolnshire and Norfolk imbued with their own histories and a new-made sense of place.

About the Author: John Gallas is a poet from Aotearoa/NZ, born in Wellington in 1950 and presently living near Markfield, Leicestershire, in the UK. HE has published 31 books of poetry, mainly with Carcanet Press. Others include SLG Press Oxford, Dempsey & Windle, Indigo Dreams, Cerasus Publishing, Cold Hub NZ, Five Leaves Editions (Nottingham), New Walk Editions (Leicester), Gerolstein Press (NZ) and Agraphia. His books include 8 poetry translations and a libretto for David Knotts (Toads on a Tapestry) and Alasdair Nicolson (The Iris Murders). He has been Orkney St Magnus Festival Poet; Fellow of the English Association; Saxonship Resident Poet (www.saxonship.org); John Clare `The Visit' poet; multiple prize and award winner (Wells Festival, Reuben Rose International, Welsh Poetry,Manchester Portico Library Prize, Stiwdio Maelor, Bucks Mills, Slipstream, Parkinsons Art, Corsham Story-Telling etc); and is presently co-editor of `Te Purere' with Vaughan Rapatahana. Gallas has appeared on BBC Radios 3 and 4 and given readings at the Commonwealth Games (Manchester), QE Hall, Cheltenham, Goldsmiths, Kirkwall, Stromness, Imperial College, Oxford and more. He contributes sets of world poetry translations to PN Review and is presently working on `Fork Flats' (a secret) and Alfred Lichtenstein. He disappears for a chunk of each week to a caravan/bike in Lincolnshire; careens up and down with Leicester City; and is a `Don Quixote', `Tristram Shandy', `Tom Jones', Pamuk, Hardy, Donne, Icelandic Saga, Schnittke, Fellini, Thorvaldsdottir, Randy Newman, Munch, Nolan, Turkey, Pacific islands kind of bloke. Billy 'Nibs' Buckshot: The Complete Works (2024) is his fourteenth Carcanet edition.

UK Delivery
Orders for delivery in the UK are normally despatched by Royal Mail, using the RM 48 Tracked Service with most orders delivered to you within a few days of placing your order with us. For larger parcels, Courier and Signed For delivery services may be used. Signed Books are shipped in our specially made book mailing cartons, with the books themselves wrapped in paper to protect them. Sometimes we may ship your order in several parts, particularly if you have 'Pre-Order' titles in your order or titles which are held in stock with our publishing partners.
The Really Important Bit: Because we use tracked, courier and signed for delivery services, please use an address at which your parcel can be received during the normal working day, for example, you may want to have your order delivered to your work address if you're not at home during the day.

Another Really Important Bit: There are a number of Postcodes in the UK for which we will need to charge a shipping supplement, this will be calculated once we know the size and weight of the shipment. For these orders we will contact customers to agree a suitable and economic method of shipping. There may also be additional time required for delivery to some areas of the United Kingdom. Where possible, we will ship book orders (under 2kg) by Royal Mail to all UK postcodes. Large multiple book orders and books over 2kg are often shipped via APC Overnight or similar, regardless of Postcode.

In some cases, particularly large and heavy books, or books being shipped to remote areas, may incur an additional shipping charge - if this is the case with your order, we'll notify you as quickly as possible of these charges and to arrange the additional payment. You can of course cancel your order with an immediate refund should you not wish to accept these additional costs. Shipments to overseas territories may incur additional Duty & Tax costs which could be requested by Fed Ex at the time of delivery. If you're coming to Coles by car, why not take advantage of the 2 hours free parking at Sainsbury's Pioneer Square - just follow the signs for Pioneer Square as you drive into Bicester and park in the multi-storey car park above the supermarket. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. You don't need to shop in Sainsbury's to get the free parking!
