This edited volume presents the results of a three-year comparative study on Chinese cultural diplomacy (CD) across Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, which contributes to the broader theoretical debate on China`s increasing soft power in international relations. The study, 'China's Cultural Diplomacy and the Role of Non-State Actors' was conducted by a research team at the Oriental Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic from 2015 to 2018. This book pays special attention to China's localized forms of CD, focusing on the regional variations and involvement of non-state actors, especially local actors outside China. Local actors involved in Chinese CD diplomacy are characterized by their intermediary status as working for the aims of two states, while trying to bridge conflicts and enhance mutual understanding.

About the Author: Jarmila Ptácková graduated from the Humboldt University in Berlin, specializing in Chinese and Central Asian Studies. She obtained her Ph.D. in Tibetan Studies from the same institution. Her research focuses mainly on Chinese development policy and subsequent social and economic changes in China's minority areas, on China's ethnic policy as well as on the role of China's minorities in the PRC's cultural diplomacy. Currently, she is affiliated with the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague.Ondrej Klimeš is a researcher at the Oriental Institute of Czech Academy of Sciences. His expertise is in politics of modern and contemporary Xinjiang and China. His expertise is in contemporary Chinese politics with focus on ideology and propaganda, ethnic policy in Xinjiang, and China's public diplomacy and influence operations in Turkey and Central Asia. He received his Ph.D. from the Charles University in Prague in 2012. Gary Rawnsley is Professor of Public Diplomacy and the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC). Working at the intersection of international relations and international communications, Professor Rawnsley has published widely on propaganda, public and cultural diplomacy, soft power and the role of the media in democratisation.Jens Damm is an Associate Fellow at the European Research Center on Contemporary Taiwan (ERCCT), Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen. He was awarded his Ph.D. at Free University of Berlin in 2002. Previously, he was an Associate Professor at the Graduate Institute of Taiwan Studies, Chang Jung University, Tainan, Taiwan and an Assistant Professor at Free University Berlin. From 2015 to 2017, he was also affiliated with the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences within the project 'China's Cultural Diplomacy: Role of Non-State Actors and Regional Variations'. He is currently also a board member of the European Association of Taiwan Studies.

UK Delivery
Orders for delivery in the UK are despatched by Courier and Signed For delivery services and will normally be delivered to you within a few days of placing your order. Signed Books are shipped in our specially made book mailing cartons, with the books themselves wrapped in paper to protect them. Sometimes we may ship your order in several parts, particularly if you have 'Pre-Order' titles in your order or titles which are held in stock with our publishing partners.
The Really Important Bit: Because we use courier and signed for delivery services, please use an address at which your parcel can be signed for during the normal working day, for example, you may want to have your order delivered to your work address if you're not at home during the day.

Another Really Important Bit: There are a number of Postcodes in the UK for which we will need to charge a shipping supplement, this will be calculated once we know the size and weight of the shipment. For these orders we will contact customers to agree a suitable and economic method of shipping. There may also be additional time required for delivery to some areas of the United Kingdom. Where possible, we will ship single book orders (under 2kg) by Royal Mail to all UK postcodes. Multiple book orders and books over 2kg are shipped via APC Overnight, regardless of Postcode.

From 1st July 2021, VAT will be applicable to those EU countries where VAT is applied to books - this additional charge will be collected by Fed Ex (or the Royal Mail) at the time of delivery.

All overseas orders are shipped using a 'signed for' courier service - please provide an address at which your parcel can be signed for on receipt. In some cases, particularly large and heavy books, or books being shipped to remote areas, may incur an additional shipping charge - if this is the case with your order, we'll notify you as quickly as possible of these charges and to arrange the additional payment. You can of course cancel your order with an immediate refund should you not wish to accept these additional costs. Shipments to overseas territories may incur additional Duty & Tax costs which could be requested by Fed Ex at the time of delivery. If you're coming to Coles by car, why not take advantage of the 2 hours free parking at Sainsbury's Pioneer Square - just follow the signs for Pioneer Square as you drive into Bicester and park in the multi-storey car park above the supermarket. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. You don't need to shop in Sainsbury's to get the free parking!
